I grew up watching Star Trek. That is where I first learned about bias — and about Captain Kirk's refusal to believe in the no-win scenario. That single principle, dramatized week after week, is the reason I became a lawyer. Surrounded as I was by science fiction and the promise of technology, it was inevitable that I would chase both.

Artificial intelligence already existed on Star Trek in the 1960s. The crew simply hailed it by saying "Computer," and a thinking machine answered in natural language — querying databases, running calculations, and reasoning aloud. What we now call conversational AI was, on that bridge, the most ordinary thing in the world.

For more than half a century, William Shatner has been the human face of humanity's relationship with technology. As Captain James T. Kirk, he commanded a fictional starship guided by a thinking machine, communicated through handheld devices, conferred with a computer that answered in natural language, and refused — famously — to accept the Kobayashi Maru.
